Sodom’s Fall and God’s Judgment — Genesis 19

Sodom is not merely an ancient city — it is a symbol of corruption and judgment. In Scripture, the sins of Sodom are invoked to rebuke the corrupt leaders of Jerusalem, serving as a warning message about Israel’s spiritual decline. The destruction of Sodom illustrates God’s judgment and the responsibility of His people to pursue holiness.

Sodom: A Symbol of Corruption and Judgment (Sodom)

The name “Sodom” comes from the Hebrew Sedom and the Greek Sodoma, meaning “an enclosed place.” It was one of the five cities of the plain of Canaan (Admah, Gomorrah, Zeboiim, Zoar, and Sodom), located in the valley of Siddim along the shores of the Dead Sea during the time of Abraham. Lot, Abraham’s nephew, settled there after parting ways with Abraham.

The inhabitants of Sodom were deeply corrupt and wicked, committing great sin before God, and as a result the city was destroyed along with Gomorrah by a rain of burning sulfur (Gen 19:24-25). From biblical times to the present day, Sodom — together with Gomorrah — has stood as a sobering symbol of corruption, depravity, wickedness, and divine judgment.

Scenes in Scripture Where the Name “Sodom” Is Used to Rebuke a Corrupt People

• Rulers of Sodom (ruler of Sodom): This refers to the leaders of Jerusalem who had become corrupt and depraved — defiling the appointed feasts, oppressing the weak through the abuse of power, and indulging in luxury and pleasure with their abundant wealth (Isa 1:10).
• Sin of Sodom (sin of Sodom): An expression used by the prophet Ezekiel (Ezek 16:49).
• Vine of Sodom (vine of Sodom): An expression used by Moses as a metaphor for Israel, referring to a vine that produces bitter, inedible clusters of grapes (Deut 32:32). It conveys the meaning that Israel, as God’s chosen people, had abandoned holy living and become a corrupt people following the immorality of Sodom and Gomorrah.

As a point of reference, the very existence of the English word sodomy — derived from “the conduct of the people of Sodom” and referring to acts of male homosexuality and bestiality — makes it easy to grasp the extent of the sexual and moral depravity that characterized Sodom at that time.
