Genesis 7:17-24 Daily Word

1. [Scripture]

[17] The flood continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. [18] The waters prevailed and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters. [19] And the waters prevailed so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered. [20] The waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep. [21] And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind. [22] Everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. [23] He blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens. They were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark. [24] And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days. (Gen 7:17-24, ESV)

# Verse 15 records that every living creature with the breath of life came to Noah in pairs and entered the ark.

This means that God brings about the work of salvation through Noah, a righteous man approved by God, and that all of this work is initiated by God Himself. In the same way, we are called to be used as evangelists who proclaim the gospel — and when we are prepared as messengers of God’s gospel, God readies those who will believe and uses us to bring the good news to those who have not yet believed.

Then in verse 16, it is written that as God had commanded him, Noah went in, and the LORD shut him in. Just as God led all 45,000 animals into the ark in perfect order without losing a single one, He will not lose a single soul that obeys His Word. This is because God is the protector and Savior of all who believe in Him.

# For forty days, torrential rain poured down upon the earth without ceasing.

Verse 17 records that the waters increased and lifted the ark above the earth; verse 18 tells us that the waters prevailed and increased greatly, and the ark floated on the face of the waters; verse 19 states that the waters prevailed so mightily that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered; and verse 20 records that the waters rose approximately 15 cubits — one cubit being about 45 centimeters, making it 6 meters and 75 centimeters — above the mountains, so that the mountains were covered. As a result, every living thing that moved on the earth perished. Verse 22 declares that everything on dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. These creatures did not die merely because of the flood disaster — rather, “men and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens” all died under God’s word of judgment upon every living thing connected to the corrupted earth.

Yet there were those who were excluded from this judgment — Noah and those who were with him in the ark. In truth, this passage tells a deeply sorrowful story. God had given all people 120 years — a period of opportunity for repentance. Even though there was more than enough time to be saved, the people refused to believe God’s Word. And so, what remained for the earth was nothing but the judgment through which it would be cleansed.

3. Application

# God has established an ark for this age as well.

Yet as time passes, people continue to reject God’s Word and the church. The reason is the same as in Scripture: this world is growing increasingly corrupt. First and foremost, it is believers themselves who are being corrupted. This is why it is so important for us to recognize that the last days are drawing near. Therefore, what we must do is pray that pastors and the church remain awake and vigilant, and we must remember that we are called to stay alert for the sake of the souls of those who do not yet believe.
